Description:
G. W. Colton’s New Map of Mexico, published during the French occupation of Mexico (1861–1867), includes two states that were never formalized—Sierra Gorda and Tehuantepec—and the disputed territory of the Soconusco on the border with Guatemala. The proposed state of Sierra Gorda eventually became absorbed into the states of Guanajuato and San Luis Potosí, while the region of Tehuantepec was distributed to the states of Veracruz, Tabasco, and Oaxaca. The border with Guatemala was not finalized until 1882 when the Soconusco region was split between the two nations.
